Looking for the Big Picture
Macro strategies for L2 teachers
My reaction to the article read from English Teaching Forum
Having had the experience of being an EFL teacher, Bilingual and ESL teacher, teacher trainer, supervisor and mentor for the last 20 years I find the article Looking for the Big Picture: Macro strategies for L2 Teacher Observation and Feedback very interesting because I believe that in our journey of educating others, we must understand ourselves as professionals as well as understanding the dynamic circumstances of our work and work of our colleagues, necessary for creating a support system.
I believe that the suggested 6 macro strategies for supervisors in this article can make a big difference in the effectiveness of learning how to focus more on collaborative professional development and our own needs as unique individuals.
Strategy 1: Examining subjectivities
Strategy 2: Articulating institutional values
Strategy 3: Understanding teachers as individuals
Strategy 4: Talking across the data
Strategy 5: Looking for the big picture Strategy
6: Providing alternatives and resources
Based on my own experiences, I definitely agree that supervisors or mentors instead of working from a vertical top – down relationship should build a collaborative horizontal approach creating concrete alternatives in a community of collaborative professionals. (Salas 2005)
I invite you to read this article written by two experienced men in the field of education, Spencer Salas and Leonardo Mercado.
